NAWIC | Wilmington - Cape Fear

Championing women to impact the direction of the construction industry.

NAWIC provides education, community and advocacy for women in the construction industry.

With more than 115 chapters across the country, the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) offers its members education, support and networking to help advance their careers in construction, build their technical skills, and become leaders.

All women working in construction are eligible for membership, including women builders in the trades, project management, marketing, administration, and executive leadership. Women in related industries who work on construction related business, such as finance, legal, and other complementary industries, are welcome as well.

Our members include some of the most accomplished women in our profession, many of whom credit NAWIC with helping them advance their careers and grow as individuals and as leaders.

“Women have made great advances in the world of work. The employment rate for women continues to rise and today there are more women in work than ever before (now accounting for just under half of the workforce). But, in construction – still one of the largest employers in the UK – progress has been abysmally slow. As the authors of this report point out, women account for only 11% of the construction workforce and just 1 % of workers on site.

Furthermore, the gender pay gap in construction is still wider than in other industries. The sector can neither justify nor countenance remaining a ‘no-go area’ for women. In order to fill the skills gap it will have to recruit and retain more women, and not just in support roles. This report picks up the challenge facing the sector and shows that change can happen. There are no easy answers, but all the authors are convinced that women must be central to the modernization of the construction industries.”

The Smith Institute thanks Meg Munn MP for editing this publication and offers our thanks to all the authors for their contributions. We also gratefully acknowledge the support of Wates Giving, Construction Youth Trust and Construction Industry Training Board.
